ARI BURNU

"Ari Burnu" has witnessed the bloodiest battles.   It was on this beach at Anzac troops landed at dawn on April 25m 1915, miles away maybe, from their intended target.  The soldiers who weren't dragged straight in to the ocean floor by their heavy packs staggered up the beach and into the unrelenting fire of the Turkish forces. The cliffs, with their menacing steepness, where the Turks waited for the landing remain unchanged today. 

But a lawn cemetery with headstones honouring the Anzac soldiers who fell on the beach that morning marks the spot where the spirit of Gallipoli was born.

Eighty-five years on the story of Anzac has lost none of its poignancy. And with the passing of the Diggers who fought thee, the legend only grows stronger.

Australians young and old continue to pay homage to the men who died on the battlefields of Gallipoli.
